A Little About Me:

I am an avid outdoorsman who lately has been spending way too much time at my desk.  I have been looking for the inspiration to get back out and do the things I love - in this case getting to the summits of mountains.   We built Yodel to give people the opportunity to prioritize things that are important to them, have the support (and therefore the accountability) of their social networks, and raise money for causes that are doing great work in the world.

My Challenge:

To summit 30 peaks in 30 days.  Crazy?  Maybe.  But it is going to be a good time making it happen!

This Challenge Is Important To Me Because:

This is important because life is short and I need to prioritize doing the things I love.  And I am getting old, fat and out of shape.  I can't do anything about the first one but I'm going to do my best to rectify the other two.

And it is important to me to give back to my community.  My friend Jamie Makena Macbeth created Kukua Pamoja after travelling to Nairobi and seeing first hand the support that was needed.  And she has been working herself silly keeping it going.   I think it is great I can help out a cause that is doing amazing work  while doing something I love!

Recent Updates

In January I finally got back into the mountains while on a ski touring trip and got up 6 peaks in one week!

Soooo….slight glitch in my ‪#‎30summitsin30days‬ plan. On the way out of Kokanee Glacier Park with Gareth Cryer on Friday, I partially dislocated my patella (aka kneecap). If you have never done this before, I don't suggest it. Luckily the doctor said that with this type of injury, if you stop activity immediately after the incident it will heal much quicker. So I should be good - I stopped for about 15 minutes to wrap it with a tensor, pop some tylenol before hiking out the 6km, 1000 m descent over the next 3 hours. So I will have to hit the pause button on this challenge and finish the remaining mountains when my knee is strong enough:(

Thanks to the Klemmensen family for donating! With their donation I have achieved my $1000 fundraising goal. But why stop there? Let's see how far past this goal we can get!

Day 14 - Got up early to beat the rain to the summit of Sunrise Mountain 2699 m, 8855 feet in Kokanee Glacier Park. Gareth and I did get caught in hail, pouring rain and way too close lightening on the way down. Our descent back to the Silver Spray hut was fast!

Day 13 - After an aborted attempt at Kyawats Mountain in the morning due to poor weather (think pouring rain on a jagged ridge covered in wet, slippery lichen), Gareth Cryer and I found enough good weather to get up Mt. MacQuarrie 2695 m, 8842 feet for summit #12.

Big thanks to Christy Nichol for supporting my challenge!

Day 10 - Summit #11 - went up Mt Crawford 2345m, 7694 ft to finish up my east shore road trip. After yesterdays big day, this seemed like a walk in the park. The road up was the most challenging part. Thanks to Ripley the mountain dog for getting me up this one:)

2014-08-12 08:20

Day 9 - Up Loki 2779m, 9117ft. On the way down from Loki, decided to take an "easy" side trip up Portman Peak, 2317 m 7600 ft. Turned out to not be as straightforward as anticipated. Ridge was blocky, and narrow with a fair amount of exposure - fun if I hadn't already been up a 9000ft peak.

Day 8 - Recon of Loki with Andrea Winckers.

Day 7 - And on the seventh day, I rested:)

Day 6 - It was bound to happen. Today's mountain mission was unsuccessful. Andrea Winckers & I were heading into the Bonnington Range and were turned back by the horribly deteriorated road.

Day 6 - It was bound to happen. Today's mountain mission was unsuccessful. Andrea Winckers & I were heading into the Bonnington Range and were turned back by the horribly deteriorated road. I was finally convinced to turn around when we were straddling a foot and a half deep run off trench on a steep section of road. This road has gone way downhill since I was up it about 5 years ago.

And our plan to go to Top of the World Provincial Park tomorrow has been stymied by that road being closed due to forest fires...c'est la vie.

Day 5 was BIG. After hiking up Mt Roberts in the morning on Tuesday (Day 4), I hauled my butt into Gwillim Lakes that evening. Met up with Martine Bedard, Andy Holmes, Sylvie and Lily yesterday morning to summit Lucifer Peak, 2726m, 8944 ft. Super impressed with the girls - they rock!

Met up with Martine Bedard, Andy Holmes, Sylvie and Lily yesterday morning to summit Lucifer Peak, 2726m, 8944 ft. Super impressed with the girls - they rock! Then Andy and I went up Dark Prince Mountain, 2742m, 8996ft for a 2 summit day. Then I hiked the 7 km back out. Felt somewhat thrashed by the time I got home last night!

Day 4 - Summit #6 - Mt Roberts. A local peak I can see from my yard! 1980m, 6496 ft. Went early(ish) with Ripley (my dog) for the 7.5km round trip, 1000m ascent. Early morning fun:)

Day 2 - 4 summits! Including Old Glory the highest peak in the Rossland Range at 2376m (7795 feet). I've hiked and ski toured it in the past so this time thought it would be a good idea to bike it. Was somewhat epic with side trips (on foot) up Mt Lepsoe (2187m, 7175 ft), Mt Elgood (2199m, 7,224) & Mt Plewman (2241m 7362ft).

I just put my money where my mouth is and contributed $50 to Kukua Pumoja in support of my challenge (why would I ask you to donate if I didn't myself?). Now I just hope my mouth hasn't written a cheque that my body can't cash:)
